R. Antony Duff is a British legal philosopher best known for his work in the philosophy of criminal law, particularly theories of punishment, criminal responsibility, and the communicative function of criminal justice. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Stirling and has also held positions at the University of Minnesota Law School.
Developed the communicative theory of punishment articulated in Punishment, Communication, and Community (2001)
Authored Trials and Punishments (1986), a foundational work on criminal responsibility
Co-directed the AHRC Criminalization project examining the proper scope of criminal law
Advanced a distinctive account of criminal attempts and intention in Intention, Agency and Criminal Liability (1990)
