Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet who founded the Transcendentalist movement and became the central figure of American Romanticism. His philosophy centered on the primacy of individual intuition, the divinity immanent in nature, and the unity of the human soul with the Over-Soul.
