Timothy Sprigge (1932–2007) was a British idealist philosopher who defended panpsychism and absolute idealism in an era dominated by analytic materialism. He is best known for his systematic defense of a Jamesian absolute idealism in which all reality is fundamentally experiential, and for his work on the ethics of animal welfare.
Developed a systematic defense of absolute idealism in 'The Vindication of Absolute Idealism' (1983)
Argued for panpsychism as a coherent metaphysical position in analytic philosophy
Made significant contributions to animal ethics, particularly 'The Rational Foundations of Ethics'
Held the Chair of Logic and Metaphysics at the University of Edinburgh
