Plotinus and Neoplatonic emanationism hold that the One necessarily overflows into being precisely because it lacks nothing, making necessity compatible with absolute self-sufficiency.

    Key Terms

Emanationism(describing how Neoplatonists believe the universe was created)
The idea that everything in reality overflows or radiates outward from a single ultimate source, like light spreading from the sun.
Necessity (in philosophy)(describing what kind of claim is being made about supernatural things)
Something that must be true or must exist; it couldn't possibly be otherwise (as opposed to something that just happens to be true but could have been different).
    Neoplatonism(as a historical religious/philosophical tradition)
An ancient philosophical school (founded around 250 CE) that saw ultimate reality as a perfect, transcendent source beyond description, from which everything else flows.
Overflows(describing how the One creates reality)
In this context, it means the One naturally produces or generates all of reality, the way a fountain naturally overflows with water.

    Plotinus
Plotinus was an ancient Greek philosopher who lived in Rome during the 3rd century AD and founded a spiritual philosophy called Neoplatonism. He taught that reality consists of different levels, with a perfect, infinite source at the top (called "the One") from which everything else flows downward, and that the goal of life is to reconnect with this divine source through contemplation and inner purification. His ideas deeply influenced later Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, making him one of the most important philosophers in Western and religious thought.
The One(Neoplatonic and Academic metaphysics; Plato's Parmenides first hypothesis)
A first principle characterized by absolute simplicity, incapable of having parts or receiving any positive predication, and ultimately not a being
self-sufficiency(as a key value in the philosophical discussion)
The ability to take care of yourself and meet your own needs without depending on others.
