1921 – 1977
Alfred Schild (1921-1977) was an Austrian-American mathematical physicist known for his work on general relativity and differential geometry. He co-authored influential texts on tensor calculus and relativity, and contributed foundational ideas to the geometric foundations of spacetime theories.
Co-authored the influential textbook 'Tensor Calculus' with J.L. Synge
Founded the Center for Relativity at the University of Texas at Austin
Developed Schild's ladder, a construction for parallel transport in differential geometry
Contributed to the geometric foundations of general relativity
Advanced theoretical understanding of mensuration in relativistic spacetime
