    Alphonse J. Smet was a Belgian Jesuit priest and philosopher who spent much of his academic career at the University of Kinshasa (formerly Lovanium University) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His work helped establish African philosophy as a legitimate academic discipline by tracing its development and arguing for the authenticity of indigenous African thought.
