Józef Maria Bocheński (1902–1995) was a Polish Dominican friar, mathematical logician, and analytic philosopher who applied formal logic to philosophical, theological, and political problems. He made foundational contributions to the history of logic and was a leading figure in the application of symbolic logic to metaphysics and the philosophy of religion. His work bridged Thomistic scholasticism and twentieth-century analytic philosophy.
Authored 'A History of Formal Logic' (1956), a landmark survey of logic from antiquity through the modern period
Developed a formal logical analysis of authority in 'The Logic of Authority' (1974)
Applied symbolic logic to philosophy of religion in 'The Logic of Religion' (1965)
Conducted systematic logical critique of Soviet Marxism in 'Der sowjetrussische dialektische Materialismus' (1950)
Cofounded the journal Studia Logica and helped establish the analytic tradition in postwar European philosophy
